My day job research topic for the week is ‘Australian Identity and Values’. So far the best thing I’ve come across, however, has been the episode of Flight of the Conchords Rob and I watched last night — the one from season two where Jemaine accidentally dates an Aussie girl. Man, was it ever funny! Also featured is the classy track ‘Too many dicks on the dance floor‘. Arj Barker’s character cracks me up.

Yesterday in Figtree mall I saw a solid bronze statue of Steve Irwin grappling a crocodile in a jewelry store display window. Who the hell would want to own a thing like that. Except maybe me — I’d put it on my bar inbetween the framed plaster Bambi-mounted-on-hessian picture I had to fight Kaaron’s small daughter for and the mannequin piss port decanter.

  1. After watching that episode, I suggested “Keitha” as a potential girl’s name to my wife. It didn’t go down too well.

That episode was great. I find it hard to watch a full ep of Flight – don’t know why, but managed to watch that one all the way through.

  3. Oooh I saw the same statuette, I dragged my mother to see it and we basically asked the same question you did, with much wonderment.

  4. That episode is one of my favourites thanks to the lines, ‘What’s her accent like?’ ‘Like ours, but evil.’ I giggled over that for ages.

I love the portrayal of Australians as brutish and horrible, it’s so accurate!

  5. There’s always a demand for Steve Irwin bronzes…among idiot Americans whose closest encounter with a dangerous reptile was wearing a snakeskin skirt back in the Eighties.
