congratulations…

Big fat congratulations are in order to Illawarra children’s writer Bill Condon who managed to score the young adult fiction prize in the Prime Minister’s literary awards with his his rite-of-passage tale Confessions of a Liar, Thief and Failed Sex God.

You can read the details here. Basically Bill is a lovely guy who deserves every inch of his success — and the $100,000 prize money.

  1. I saw that on, I think, the SBS news. What I loved is that they reported his novel as being called “Confessions of a Liar” – while the full title flashed up on screen. Hilarious.

  2. Nice to hear he’s been awarded for that book – which also happens to be the book we get the biggest number of complaints about by idiot wowser parents at the bookshop. 🙂 (ie – Them: ‘How dare you stock a book like this in your childrens’ section!’ Us: ‘Um…do you actually hae any idea what this book’s about?’

  3. Congratulations, Bill. 27 years is a bloody good effort. The revelation that it had earned only $2800 in 12 months is kind of tragic. It seems like a big prize, but really, it’s only as much as a non-artistic person earns in a year. Maybe he can treat himself to some good books!

I was at the book launch for one of the other winners, “The Colony”. It looked amazing. The author’s speech was fascinating. I wanted a copy so badly and I just did not have the money. if I ever win a writer’s prize, I’m going straight out to buy “The Colony.”

And in the meantime I’ll see if the library has Bill’s book. I always feel a bit evil putting my name down to reserve YA, like I’m keeping a REAL YA from enjoying it.

    • Bill so deserves this prize. Go reserve the book — those ungrateful genuine YAs can wait their turn.
