space movies

Coughing our guts up with lurgi last night, we piked on our Sydney dinner engagement and stayed on the couch to watch Moon.

I really enjoyed it so tonight, in the mood for more space action, we rewatched Alien 4. Now, I always liked that flick but recall critics and friends alike giving it a solid bucketing at the time it was released. I had completely forgotten it was written by Joss Whedon — or perhaps at the time that name meant nothing to me. No matter. What became quickly evident tonight was the underpinnings of Firefly within the script.

Smershy is doing well — his swollen face has almost returned to normal. I have a sore butt and knees from an hour and a half spent bike riding this morning, and a smug sense of satisfaction from all the synopsis plotting I’ve done over the past three days. But best of all, looks like I’ve finally stopped coughing!

  1. I recall Whedon claiming in interviews that his screenplay to Alien Resurrection was so heavily rewritten on the set by other people – and without his knowledge – that when he finally saw the film at the world premiere he actually burst into tears.

I personally think the film is a mess – lots of great ideas, very poor execution, and a visible gap between the style of the script and the style of the director.

      • As with the cinema release of Alien 3, I could see moments when a good script was trying to fight its way out through the mess, in chest-burster mode. But unlike Alien 3, the ending of Alien Resurrection left me thinking, “Jesus, they really have run out of new story ideas, haven’t they?”

    • I agree with the mess part. Although the last time I looked into the details, I concluded Whedon wasn’t completely blameless, even if the director was loopy. I doubt I could reconstruct my reasoning off the top of my head, though.

Whedon did put some barbs about it into Angel, which is always amusing.

  2. We LOVED “Moon”! Fantastic ideas and so well executed. Recommended it to my brother who teaches ethics. Not sure if he’s watched it yet.

      • Yeah, have’t been on LJ for ages 🙁
Have been flat out starting a Masters. 1st two assignments due in next 2 weeks, plus starting to get some (paid!) work again. Writing and reading for fun is having to take a back seat for a little while. Getting back into study mode is taking a little while and some head-adjusting.
        Hope you’re going well.

        • you do sound busy! I’ve just been writing my arse off. The rest of the year will be more of the same so my LJ posts are likely to be rather dull i expect.
