sci fi

I’ve always had a shaky relationship with Stargate. Loved the movie, thought the TV show was silly and never got around to watching Atlantis. But when I learned Robert Carlisle was to be at the helm in Stargate Universe, my first thought was ooh! Begbie in space! We’re five episodes in and loving it on Blu Ray.

Watching is really making me regret that some clueless network bastards canned Defying Gravity though. Anyone else catch that before it got axed? It would have been six months ago we saw it and I’m still fretting about what happened to Zoe Barnes on Venus after she retrieved the Orb…

Dontcha love it when you spend your time fretting about people who aren’t even real!

Defying Gravity was doomed from the start – as soon as I saw how slow moving it was with all the flashbacks I knew that it would get cancelled – Fox don’t understand the slow burn type of show. Which was a pity of course, because I did like it and it really got moving properly just about the point that it got cancelled in the states. That was after only 8 episodes. Luckily the other 5 episodes were shown elsewhere.

    • yes, I was quite indifferent to the first couple of episodes, but once I’d bonded, I was totally there

  2. I really liked the 1st half of the Stargate movie, but then it was just shoot-em ups like most SF films devolve into. Never dug the tv series, but did get quite interested at the Begbie in Space thing. (I do love Robert Carlysle). But not quite enough to watch it.

Watching Breaking Bad about a family man diagnosed with cancer making some bad decisions to try and help his family financially for when he dies. Makes sense to me.

    • I also liked the first half of the Stargate movie, particularly the visuals and James Spader as Jackson – but what most irritated me about it turning into a shoot-em-up was that it seemed like an ad for the NRA, saying it was good for boys to play with automatic weapons. I now think of it as an amusing period piece: it’s hard to think of anyone making a film nowadays in which Arabic-looking child soldiers are on the side of the good guys.

  3. OOh! I love ALL of Stargate. The movie (despite the HUGE plot hole) and all the series and telemovies.

SG1 can take a few eps to get into — and you need to get past the whole MacGuyver thing — but it really is one of my fav shows ever. You have to watch it in order too.

Atlantis takes an entire season to get into, and you kinda need to watch it fast and get it over with. But it really does improve.

I’ve only seen the first half of Universe, but from what I’ve seen, I like.

    • With 7 weeks off inbetween jobs one year, I watched the entire 7 boxed seasons of Stargate. In serious need of a sea change, it was perfectly suited for my amusement requirements at the time: lots of cool alien stuff and sparkly costumes. Flying pyramids, etc. But it was naff. Not like real sci fi (eg, Dr Who, BSG) No need to argue back… I do understand its all horses for courses.

      • Ahh — I like the softer end of scifi, reading and watching. I think it’s because as a kid, ET freaked me the fuck out. I don’t really know how that works.

And hard scifi feels too much like homework…
