Dad

Didn’t achieve much communication with Dad today. He was drugged up when I visited and they’re leaving that damn tube in one more day. But they assure us he’s doing well. I won’t be able to get back up to Sydney for a couple of days so I’ll have to save my bedside chatter until then.

I hadn’t realised but the man in the other ICU burns unit next to Dad’s room is the Indian student who was hit by a Molotov cocktail through his front window when he was minding his own business at home one day. I haven’t been following the news much these past weeks but apparently there have been race riots in Sydney as a result of the attack. Another room a little down the hallway is being guarded by police 24/7. It contains a bikie gang member who was shot while sitting in his car. The nurse said they don’t usually have so many attack victims in the ward.

And so, life goes on. It breaks my heart to see Dad lying there so banged up and uncomfortable, but he’s healing so quickly and the knowledge that we’re getting him back in one piece means its just a waiting game. I was never very good at patience. Learning slowly. Taking it day by day.

Thanks again for all your support. I’ll tell my Dad about you all when he’s sitting up and grumbling about all the tubes and dials, gloop-filled bags on sticks and machines that go ping. He’s never been a fan of the modern world, yet it’s the modern world that’s delivering him back on his feet. Spaceship silver burn wraps that ooze antibiotic gel, facial stitching so utterly fine you can barely see the scar that ripped his face apart a mere two weeks after the assault. Amazing stuff.
