The red eye special

You know that episode of Futurama where Fry wins the Slurm contest and they go to Planet Wormulon to party with Slurms Mckenzie the party worm? Slurms removes his glasses revealing his eyes, which are frazzled red blobs on stalks. Slurms got that way from 40 years of forced partying. Right now I’m looking and feeling a lot like Slurms, only there isn’t a party in sight.

I’ve spent the past however long writing, writing, writing, all to a plan, only the goalposts remain forever shimmering like mirages in the distance. I keep giving things up in order to snatch a few more precious writing hours. Goodbye drumming, cycling, reading anything that isn’t a Cosmos submission or my own turgid prose (or a Lee Child thriller, but I’m starting to suspect that’s some kind of mental health issue). The lack of reading includes blogs by the way — whatever you’re up to right now, I don’t know anything about it. I’m still managing an hour of CV exercise a day, but even so, I’m looking a lot more like Slurms Mckenzie these days than a gal oughta.

I hope everyone else out there is scoring better on the work-life balance card than I am right now.
