oops…
Oh dear. I seem to have misplaced one of the characters in my novel. I honestly can’t remember if I killed him off, forgot about him or if he wandered off into the sunset of his own accord. How vary careless of me.

Pesky characters! It’s like herding cats, isn’t it.
Perhaps you could do what Sir Walter Scott did in “Ivanhoe”. Robin Hood and some of his Merry Men appear early on as characters, but only much later in the story (which I think was being published as a serial) did Scott realise he’d completely forgotten about Little John, who then gets rather lamely mentioned as “being away on a secret mission in Scotland”.

If it’s any consolation, Shakespeare did the exact same thing in King Lear with the Fool, and it’s still considered a literary masterwork.

Just have him pop up and say “Hallo. I just got back from the shops!”
Fixes everything.
