one of those internet meme thingys
1. When I say "banana", what sort of thoughts flit through your mind?
Sad thoughts. Bananas are an endangered species. In 10-30 years there will be no more bananas due to Panama disease, a fungus that renders bananas brick-red and inedible, and where will sexual innuendo, cornflakes and slapstick routines be then?
2. "Snark is an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet." – discuss.
Snark is one of the few positive side-effects of ageing. As well as being beautiful, young people are generally cursed with a sub-dermal protective encasement of hope, faith and inspiration. Fortunately, post 40-something, the snark valve kicks in, sporadically releasing subtle secretions which, as well as being colourless and odourless, enable the experiencer to engage with reality and deal with it.
3. Favourite con you ever attended, and why?
Hmmm. I’ve really enjoyed the three World Fantasy cons I’ve attended in the US, but I reckon the first couple of Swancons around the turn of the millennium probably take the prize. I felt like I was making a connection. Finding my people, that sort of thing. I always manage to have a good time in Perth.
4. Favourite writer, and why?
Because it’s a neck-and-neck tie between Margaret Atwood and Michael Marshall this week, I’m going to nominate Graham Joyce. The man is a natural born storyteller. He makes everything engaging and fascinating, whether in print or in person. One of those writers who I can’t believe isn’t seriously and utterly famous. Check out Requiem or Smoking Poppy if you’re looking for something to wake you up this weekend.
5. How do you get your hair to sit like that? No, seriously, dude. Your curls would kick my curls’ arses.
I do not possess independent control of my hair. I handed it over to infamous Paris-trained Mangerton hair artiste Suellen years ago and I’ve never looked back. She picks the colour(s), shape and style. She knows everything about everybody within a five-mile radius of her salon. We go cycling along the coast road on Sundays.

I did not know that about bananas! That *is* sad, particularly as they are my son’s favourite food.
