red dawn

Peeked through the blinds at 6 am to a still and lingering dawn. The sky was rust, like I’d woken on Mars. The cats were uneasy. They knew there was something wrong out there. Rob went outside for a clearer look. I hesitated. Too many novels and films with apocalyptic themes begin with home owners shielding their eyes to stare up at a troubled sky.

if it didn’t come with all this dust, it’d be cool.

It’s a little like Mars, but even more like Titan for coloration, I reckon. Mars is more given over to a sort of salmony-sandy-pink, whereas Titan does more of the orangy-red-brown tones that the SMH pix are showing. (Incidentally, if the colour values of the SMH photos are true, then I’m distinctly envious: we had the dust yesterday in Canberra, but all it could manage here was a sort of yellowy-brown. Mind you, I didn’t get to see it at sunrise or sunset, which is when it might have been more spectacular. But certainly an atmospheric phenomenon, in more senses than one.)

So, you've actually been to Mars and Titan then, have you?

I’m so glad it’s not just me who has that thought go through their head at times like this *grin*. I really should change my reading list…
