Trekkin in style

Yesterday arvo, after visiting Mum and Dad, we went to the Sydney Opera House to hear the Sydney Symphony Orchestra play music from the Star Trek movies. A big screen behind the orchestra showed Trek clips and other space-themed footage. They kicked off with Also Sprach Zarathustra and The Blue Danube from 2001: A Space Odyssey, followed by Holst’s Mars from The Planet Suite and a really lovely piece from Transformers! After interval the conductor, Guy Noble, came out wearing a yellow Star Trek top. He cracked witty Trek jibes between each piece as clips from all 11 movies screened along with segments of their soundtracks.

What surprised me most was the lack of visible Trekkies in the audience. There was one solitary dude in a Next gen jumpsuit, but other than that it was pretty hard to pick. Is Trek that utterly mainstream these days or was the audience mostly made up of SSO subscribers?

They’ve just had their first full-on mainstream hit movie in something like thirteen years. I think there’s a lot of new mainstream fans out there… plus a lot of folks who might have worn the uniform thirteen years ago, but after all that time away now it won’t fit. :-)

All the early fans are the regular orchestral concert goers of the world these days. It’s a natural metamorphosis. Another natural metamorphosis is from all of Australis’s lefties from the early 1950s. I’ve often wondered if these two phenomena are linked.

Lucky you! I wanted to go to that, but getting time off work not so easy… :)

Maybe they decided the Opera House wasn’t the place for such clothing, or maybe they were too scared to wear them around the centre of Sydney?
