stuff

Dad continues to improve bit by bit. His eating is no longer of concern – Mum says he’s stuffing his face like there’s no tomorrow. It’s his head we need to worry about now rather than his body. In order to progress to rehab he needs to exhibit a specific range of cognitive skills. in short, he needs to be able to do what he’s told. But he’s not in the mood for such things. Instead he’s been sprouting philosophy at the bewildered little Asian nurses, getting shitty when they ignore him and get on with their jobs. ‘They’ve got no imagination!’ he tells me, the sort of statement that has always given me the shits. Anyone else listening in would be sure he’s a raving loony but to those who know him, yeah, that’s Dad alright.

In other news, I managed to write 800 words of my Ishtar story on Monday and another 500 after work last night. Small steps, but as I haven’t written a thing in 2 months I’m encouraged by my progress. I’m still spending great swathes of my free time lying in the sun reading thrillers but I’m sure the vitamin D is doing me good.

In an overexcited moment last week I bought a ticket to San Jose for World Fantasy Con at the end of October. Not really sure why I’m going other than that I like the two friends I’ll be travelling with and I’m pretty damn sure I could do with a holiday. I’m really looking forward to Continuum 5 coming up in Melbourne in a couple of weeks too. Was very bummed to have missed the Natcon.  Hanging for some chill time in the bar with my buddies.

He sounds like a typical old fella. My dad, my friend’s dad, Geraldine’s partner, all did this: refused to listen, refused to do what they were told and drove everyone crazy. I wish I knew why. I put it down to old age and cantankerousness….hope its just a stage and it runs out soon.

Nintendo DS has some logic and brain games to help keep the old brain pan going well, would your Dad go for something like that? There are logic games that might tempt him, plus trivia…

I read in Stroke of Insight that was one way the doctor retrained her brain after her stroke.

Dad is an utter luddite. I'm thinking crossword puzzles might be the go.

Good to hear you getting back into the writing. Sorry I won’t be there to hang with you in Melbourne.

As I might have mentioned, my dad was a bear in rehab--hated hated hated it. The only reason he cooperated at all, I suspect, is that he knew he wouldn't get out unless he did and got better. He's been improving every day at home with a visiting nurse, speech and physical therapy. Does your dad realize that if he cooperates he will move on????
