donnacon redux

I’m still astonished by how much writing I seem to get done at Donnacon, aka FWOR (fantasy writers on retreat, pronounced FFFWWWWOOOORRRRRRRR!!! In fact, the only downside is the incredulous amount of carbohydrates I seem to ingest while I’m at it. I blame Canberra’s cold weather rather than my own ability to say no to potato chips, toast and chocolate.

So I’m back home today hitting the healthy fruit salad and spit polishing the final four chapters of book one. Book one of what? you ask. Book one of the YA trilogy my long suffering novel has mutated into. So many of my fellow fantasy writers who were kind enough to have a squiz at the thing came back with the opinion that the writing was YA so I finally caved in. As   said, its a tone thing. I have nothing against YA, its just that I wouldn’t have thought I’d know how to write one!

Anyway, whatever. A book is a book and I’m very close to having three of the fuckers in the bag, after which I will joyfully be reclaiming the rest of my writing life.

Book one is called Effigy. This is pretty funny because Effigy just happens to be the name of an old ex boyfriend’s band. Think I might email him with the news — he could probably do with a laugh.

Sounds like a postitive move! If a scary one…

If you’re interested in hitting up what’s new and interesting in YA this year, I am completely addicted to The Story Siren, one of the best and most comprehensive YA book bloggers around. Only trouble is, every time she posts I have to get my credit card out…

Hey Cat.

Hope the writing goes well.
I’m working on a YA novel at the moment too. :-)

yeah, but I'll bet yours started out as a YA! Mine could end up a cook book by time I'm finished...

Are you sure they didn’t just say that because a YA trilogy is easier to sell in Oz than a ginormous standalone?

I don't think so. Besides, if I stick my three maybe-or-maybe-not YA novels together I end up with a ginormous standalone!

either way seems like a good thing.

But I seem to remember you saying you couldn’t write literary fiction either… rofl

Would you believe I've only just finished that photographer story I started at Clarion...
