Took the weekend off from the usual wordcount blitzkrieg. Caught up with acidheadwar on Friday, Justine & Scott on Saturday night & spent most of the spaces inbetween reading Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, a book I really meant to pick up 25 years ago. But if I had picked it up and read it in the mid-80s, I would have found it impossible to suspend disbelief and accept a society in which women were stripped of possessions, finace, identity and freedom, shrouded in singular colours and forced to be breeding machines in some or other god’s name. Post-Taliban, it barely even qualifies as science fiction.

In other news, Smershy has utterly rejected the kitty bed we bought for him at K-mart. I told Rob it was a dumb idea. Cats never sleep where you want them to sleep. And besides, its too hot for cloth. Smersh is on my desk, Nemo has stuffed himself into a cardboard box and Pazuzu is flaked out on the ironing board.
