Can I just ask WTF happened to Australian Table magazine? One minute it was there in its usual spot by the checkout at Coles, the next minute it’s gone along with whatever online presence it may once have had… I don’t buy cooking magazines. I don’t buy magazines at all except for Fortean Times, but a friend put me on to Australian Table a few years back by telling me that its recipes were both stylish and simple to prepare. And they were. So I’d been buying it religiously every month & using it to conjure up meals that looked a whole lot more impressive than the sum of their parts.
Curiously, the magazine’s editor happened to be a woman who’d been in my marketing class at UTS back in 2002. A small blonde thing whose clothes used to freak me out — she was so far ahead of what passed for fashion in my minescule world view that I had trouble understanding some of her outfits. She was the top student in the class, scoring high distinctions when I was barely scraping up a pass. Polite and friendly, despite her terrifying haute couture. Wherever you are, Sophie, I hope you’ve scored yourself another job.

I’ll have to check, but I won a subscription (via chesse) to one of the Australian cooking mags and it has recently changed it’s name (2 or 3 months ago). It *might* have been Aus Table to start with…

I love that: “…I had trouble understanding some of her outfits…”
It’s such an inherently female idea. No straight male would ever even consider trying to ‘understand’ an outfit. Clothes are to be worn, or looked at. But understood? Hell, you might as well try to understand a pile of bricks, or a pizza.
