congratulations!
To Kim Westwood, whose debut novel Daughters of Moab is now officially launched. I must admit to being disappointed that so few of her Sydney writer friends attended the launch.

Is that because she sold out? “Sold Out” in this case meaning she sold a novel before they did.*
I like the look of the book and I think it will do better than the average.
*I’m not entirely kidding. I’ve encountered at least two writers who couldn’t hide their disappointment a friend sold a book before they did. And I know one who smiled when a decision to accept a close colleague’s book was reversed. She said, “That means there’s more room for me”.
Everything I know about Kim is that she wishes success for all her friends so I’m heartily pleased for her.

Hard to say, but my guess is that folks just couldn't be arsed leaving the house on a Saturday afternoon.

Further apologies from the House of Sickness for not making it! (Now it looks like I’ve given Kate my bug *on top of* her general sleep dep. Whee. Splat.)

I didn't realise it was Kate's 40th. Hey, maybe you can buy her Kimmy's book as a birthday present!

I’d love to have been there, as I was for Nathan, but alas I was working in the bookshop all day as I do every Saturday. Nevertheless, I sat at the desk reading ‘Daughters of Moab’ (as I am reviewing it for Black magazine) and convinced two customers that it was the latest SF/Fantasy book that they just HAD-TO-READ! So, two sales from a small bookshop in the westy suburbs of Sydney isn’t too bad

Good man! I'm going to start reading my copy today. I was about to start on a Margaret Atwood novel, but then realised 'why read Atwood when I could be reading Westwood'!

Yay, Kimmie! I love her and her style. I think HC did a very smart thing by publishing Kim because she writes the kind of fantasy that even non-fantasy readers will enjoy. That, and she is supremely talented. It’s so rewarding to see it finally recognised. IMHO both Kims push down that EPIC FANTASY ONLY mood that HC seem to have acquired (well, to the casual observer, anyway) and that can only be a good thing for all writers.
Thanks for publishing the photos, Cat. It wasn’t as good as being there but I had 20 kids and a puppet theatre that kept collapsing and 1000 ks in the way.
