when research is stranger than fantasy novel writing…


I spent the whole day researching Saharan terrain, weather patterns and traditional nomadic lifestyles. This is the most interesting thing I learned:

“There is, however, a tradition of blind guides in the Sahara, men who could check their position at the end of each day by the smell of the sand.”

When I read ‘The History of Dust’ I was intrigued to know that dust from the Sahara was in my house every day, on my car. Ditto, a speck of star dust was falling on my car every 20 minutes or so.
