happy birthday Caroline

Last night we went to Caroline’s 40th birthday party in Stanwell Park. And it rocked! It was a really good vibe: A 1968 theme party featuring live music, groovy people in groovy outfits. Kids running underfoot, big pots of curry on
the deck, splifs passing from hand to hand, people taking turns at the instruments & managing to sound like the music was planned rather than impromptu. My friends Stew, Monica (the couple whose wedding I attended recently) and Caroline’s brother Chris were there, all in fine form, and I remembered how much I enjoyed parties like this & how seldom I attend them these days.

Also present was a woman I’d not seen in about 15 years: Sue. She looked awesome. Big hair – she might have stepped right off the set of an episode of Roger Moore’s The Saint. We caught up on what we’d been doing for the last fifteen years in the time it takes to knock off a couple of Midori, coconut and pineapple breezers (I selected drinks to match my outfit) She’s been doing music and teaching & had a kid. And then she told me something that left me gobsmacked and awestruck for the entire rest of the evening. In London, where she was for most of the time I lost touch with her, she taught music to children including Simon le Bon’s kids! She’d actually had Le Bon & John Taylor visit her classroom!!! Needless to say, nothing that might pass for an achievement in my boring life could come close to topping that one!
