pan’s labyrinth
Saw Pan’s Labyrinth last night for the first time. What a stunning film. And I really can’t decide if the fantasy elements are ‘real’ or if Ofelia imagines them. Check it out:

Isn’t that a lovely movie? I figure it’s “real” since they show the tree blossoming at the end, which implies that her actions in driving the toad away had an effect.

And also because the chalk door works when she breaks out of her locked bedroom.

See, I want it to be real... and the blossom suggests its real, but it could be read as a metaphor for hope.

Some of the most glorious effects I’ve seen in a while: the insect turning into a fairy? Pan himself? Glorious! And I watched it with a friend who has done her Honours in Franco’s Spain, and she kept saying “that sort of thing *really* happened,” which just made it even more poignant.
The bits about the military, that is, really happened… I’m not vouching for the fantastical elements…

I had no doubts about the military barbarism
