The Melbourne Natcon was filled with all the usual fun stuff: big group dinners, drunken arguments, lewd behaviour, panels, debates, book selling, book football (don’t cringe, it was only a Bryce Courtney we kicked to pieces), laughter, tears, dumplings, launches, Daikaiju Blue cocktails with jelly dinosaurs perched on the glass rims, a room party which was shut down by the hotel along with threats to call the cops, and the absolute highlight of it all, ten tentacles and a bucket of slime. I’m referring to the screening of Claire McKenna’s The Liminal movie. What a surprise it turned out to be! Still a bit rough round the edges, but not the dodgy early-Dr-who-esque embarrasment I was expecting at all. The Liminal is an arty movie. And, obviously, I was awesome in it as the (briefly glimpsed) squid woman.

I was sitting next to Claire during the Liminal showing and she was in knots of anxiety about every little flaw in the work print shown. I tried to reassure her that she had a sympathetic audience, but the poor thing was in a bit of a state.

As I would be. It's a big thing showing your art to an audience, no matter how sympathic.
Which is why I don't publish anything.

They were the coolest, blue cocktails and yummy dinosours. Well done Cat. No one can beat you for a room party.

I haven’t been kicked out of a party with threats of the imminent arrival of the cops for, um, must be forty years…what fun! Thanx Cat.
